The Death of Ivan Ilych
New Stage Adaptation of the Tolstoy novella by Stephen Sharkey
Another Perfomance is also scheduled on Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 PM
Directed by Leo Lion (Associate Artistic Director, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble)
With Craig Smith (Producing Artistic Director, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble)
A new adaptation of Tolstoy's famous novella “The Death or Ivan Ilyich”. The arrogant and competitive Ivan is quite surprised to find himself at his own funeral —it is a funny, wry and ultimately a moving piece about coming to terms with death. The interactive performance is placed in a setting where the audience is part of a support group for people who are concerned about mortality.
Performed by Craig Smith who has been called by the New York Times "one of New York's consistently fine actors" and by Playgoer.com as "a downtown legend." The production is directed by Phoenix Theatre Ensemble Associate Artistic Director, Leo Lion.
Craig Smith (Ivan Ilyich) was an ensemble member of New York’s prestigious Jean Cocteau Repertory where he made his artistic home for more than 3 decades appearing in over 200 productions from Stoppard to Shakespeare and Sophocles to Williams. In 2004 Craig and 4 colleagues founded Phoenix Theatre Ensemble, an award-winning Off-Broadway artist-directed ensemble. Mr. Smith has been called “One of New York's most consistently fine actors" by The New York Times, "Undoubtedly one of the best comic actors in New York" by Time Out, and “A downtown theatre legend" by Playgoer.com. Mr. Smith is the recipient of the President of the Borough of Manhattan’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Arts and Community Service. Mr. Smith and his family have recently relocated to Nyack.
Leo Lion (Director) is a New-York based director and the founder/Artistic Director of The Firebird Project, an initiative to cultivate creative leadership opportunities in the Arts for young people. He has directed six productions with Firebird Youth Theater (Down the Chocolate River & Beyond, eXpresso, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Treasure Island, Romeo + Juliet, Our Town) and is a three-time recipient of the National Youth Arts Award for Outstanding Direction. Plays written by Leo have been produced by Firebird, Downtown Art, and Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival. Leo was Assistant Director of PTE’s 2018 production of Judas and he was recently named Associate Artist Director of Phoenix Theatre Ensemble.
