John Scott Armchair Tour: River Hook: the Hester Haring Cason Preserve

The Historical Society of the Nyacks, the Friends of River Hook and the Nyack Library present an evening exploring the past and future of Upper Nyack's River Hook: the Hester Haring Cason Preserve. Noted local historian Mike Hays will share a multimedia presentation via Zoom on the history of the 12-acre parcel that extends from North Broadway to Midland Avenue.

The Preserve is the largest remnant of one of the six original farms of Upper Nyack that extended from what is now Route 9W to the Hudson River. Hays will survey this history from the earliest European arrival, Claus Jensen van Purmerant, to Hester Haring and James Cason, who married after meeting at work at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in 1965.
The bucolic image of a herd of sheep that the couple allowed to graze on the sloping hills of the estate is indelibly etched into the minds of many residents of the Nyacks.

In 2018, the Village of Upper Nyack acquired the land establishing it as a vital, self-sustaining and treasured place for retreat, repose and reinvention where the arts, environment, education and innovation thrive. Friends of River Hook was later established to work alongside the Village to oversee and fund the Preserve. Slides from a recently completed master plan of the project will be presented after Hays' lecture.
